Gallbladder surgery also known as cholecystectomy is used to treat gallstones, cancer and other disorders that affect the bladder. In complicated cases, an open cholecystectomy may be performed. Gallbladder surgery or cholecystectomy is performed under general anesthesia. This means the patient is unconscious and pain-free. Gallbladder removal is most commonly performed through four small incisions, with the doctor using a small video camera, called laparoscope. It’s important to emphasize that laparoscopic surgery often has a lower rate of complications, a shorter hospital stay, and better cosmetic results than an open procedure.
Procedure – In this video before the gallbladder surgery begins the patient is administered with general anesthesia.
During a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, small incisions of up to half an inch are made and plastic tubes called ports are placed through these incisions. The camera and the instruments are then introduced through the ports which allow access to the inside of the patient. The camera transmits an image of the organs inside the abdomen onto a television monitor. While watching the monitor, the surgeon uses the instruments to carefully separate the gallbladder from the liver, ducts, and other structures. The surgeon inserts a needle through the navel and pumps carbon dioxide gas through it to create space in the abdomen. This step may raise blood pressure. Antihypertensive drugs may be helpful during gallbladder surgery to protect patients who have high blood pressure or heart or kidney disease.
Long specially designed instruments are inserted through the other three ports that allow your surgeon to delicately separate the gallbladder from its attachments to the liver and the bile duct and then remove it through one of the ports from the abdomen. After the gallbladder is removed from the abdomen then the small incisions are closed. Because the abdominal muscles are not cut during laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, patients have less pain and fewer complications than they would have had after surgery using a large incision across the abdomen. Recovery usually involves only one night in the hospital, followed by several days of restricted activity at home.
After surgery, most patients will spend several hours recovering at the hospital and then be released either the same day or the next day, barring complications.

Indian hospitals have entered into joint ventures and partnerships with overseas providers in a bid to develop the medical tourism sector.
